GLBT Mission Statement

APW is committed to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) community in Central Massachusetts. Through our Prevention and Screening Department, we provide a range of services with the goal of providing support, counseling and education to members of the GLBTQ community who live and work here. Services are offered to individuals regardless of their HIV status (HIV positive or negative).

All services are free and confidential!

Services offered through the GLBT Department:

  • PrEP – Pre-exposure Prophylaxis
  • Health Education

  • Online Outreach
  • HIV, Hepatitis C, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Screening Services
  • Supportive Educational Groups
  • Condoms, dental dams, and lube

Health Education

Staff is available to provide educational sessions to individuals and groups. We tailor our sessions to the needs of the client. We are particularly sensitive to the needs of GLBTQ people.

Club and Bar Outreach

Outreach staff is present at local bars and clubs. We are available to answer questions, provide you with condoms, lube, dental dams, and other HIV/STD prevention materials. We are also around just to chat and say hello. Our staff wears badges indicating that they are from AIDS Project Worcester (APW).

Online Outreach

Outreach staff is available on many of your favorite websites. We’re there to offer support, chat, provide information, and make referrals for HIV/STD testing.

2) Hepatitis C Testing: A blood draw is performed by a trained phlebotomist. Specimens are sent out to a lab with results available in 3-5 business days.
3) Syphilis Testing: A blood draw is performed by a trained phlebotomist. Specimens are sent out to a lab with results available in 3-5 business days.
3) Gonorrhea and Chlamydia Testing: Urine sample is sent to a laboratory for testing. Results are available in 3-5 business days.

Screening services are available at our office at 85 Green Street (entrance at 12 Plymouth Street), Worcester Monday-Friday am-4 pm and Saturdays from noon-4 pm. For more information, call (508) 755-3773 and ask for Prevention and Screening.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

APW is collaborating with UMass Memorial Healthcare to provide PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) to those who are HIV-negative. If your partner is HIV-positive, if you have multiple sexual partners, if you are a person who injects drugs, or if you are an MSM, then you might benefit from this one pill a day regimen to keep you HIV-negative. Call Amanda Mehaffey at 508.755.3773, extension 29. or email her at for more information. The PrEP medication might be free to you; counselors are available to discuss options.

Supportive Educational Groups

APW offers group sessions for GLBT people. Groups are a great way to meet other people in the area, get outside of your comfort zone, talk about what’s going on in your life, and get information. Call 508.755.3773 and ask for Prevention and Screening to find out what groups are being offered as they might change. All groups are free, safe, and completely confidential.

We currently offer the following groups:
